Candidate Training Academy & Best Practices for Choosing REALTOR® Champions
There is still time to schedule these courses for your association in 2016! NAR has only five grants left to bring either of these courses to your association free of charge. You recruit the attendees and print the materials. The Candidate Training Academy is a day-long course to educate REALTOR®-friendly candidates on the ins and outs of running for office. The Best Practices for Choosing REALTOR® Champions educates your volunteer members on how to discern the best candidate for your association to support through proper questions, the interview process and other time-tested methods. Contact Kyle Lambert London for additional information and how to obtain one of these last spots. |

Rental Housing Restrictions? Issues Mobilization to the Rescue!
As the U.S. home ownership rate has declined in recent years, rental occupancy has steadily increased. Whether in a vacation destination or a college town, rental properties can have a positive economic impact, but they can also create issues in a community. Citing reasons such as neighborhood character, renter safety and code compliance, local government regulation of rental housing is on the rise. Regulation can take the form of licensing/registration requirements, proximity restrictions, operational restrictions, occupancy limits, parking requirements, neighbor notification, numerical caps or even outright bans. NAR’s Issues Mobilization Program can provide the financial and technical assistance that you need to address rental restrictions in your locality, whether fighting an onerous proposal or proactively pursuing your own policy solution. For more information, please contact Julienne Uhlich at 202-383-1235 or Joe Maheady at 202-383-1006. |

First-Quarter Broker Involvement Grant Approved
The Advocacy Leaders (REALTOR® Party Member Involvement Committee and Broker Involvement Council Chairs and Vice Chairs) approved five grants in this first quarter. The review committee met and focused their first quarter discussion and application selection on recruitment, retention, education and engagement of brokers and their agents. The questions they continually asked included: How much time is devoted to brokers? How many brokers and agents will be touched by this event? What is the follow up? How does the event tie into advocacy and the criteria? The next deadline is June 15. To fill out an application, go to: http://www.realtoractioncenter.com/realtors/brokers/grant/
The associations whose grants were approved are:
- Kentucky Association of REALTORS® / Broker Summit
- Mississippi REALTORS® / MS Regional Broker Roundtables
- North Central Penn Board of REALTORS® (PA) / Joint Association Legislative Luncheon
- Reading-Berks Association of REALTORS®(PA) / Broker Training Session with VIP reception with Berks County federal, state, local politicians
- Akron Cleveland Association of REALTORS® (OH) / Broker Forum

Hot Topic Alert: Real Estate Crowdfunding “Crowdfunding” is a term much in vogue recently. Traditional lending sources are bypassed with crowdfunded projects, allowing individual investors to directly evaluate a proposal based on their own criteria or financial interests. The system has populist appeal: in theory, crowdfunding enables those who would otherwise be denied access to capital to move forward with a crowdfunded platform.

How Walkable is Your Community?
Walkable communities are becoming the latest trend in real estate, in which residents can walk, bike or take transit to grocery stores, shops, schools, work, cafes and parks. You and your members need to be aware of the impact walkable communities have on their business and real estate. Register for a free webinar on May 3 to get an overview of a walkable community; walkability’s impact on real estate; the demand for walkable communities; and one community's strategy to become more walkable. Message from the GAD Chair

Jenny Reese
GAD Chair
Nevada Association of REALTORS®
|
I can't believe it's almost May. That means the 2016 REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo is quickly approaching. This year, NAR has scheduled all of the GAD-specific meetings at the Washington Hilton. If you haven't booked your hotel yet, you may consider staying at the un-official “host hotel” for the GADs.
I highly encourage you to stay for the Professional Development Session on Friday, May 13 at 2:30 pm, following the GAD Meeting and the State and Local Breakout Sessions. Brad Fitch, CEO of the Congressional Management Foundation in Washington D.C., will focus on member mobilization, a much requested topic in the GAD Institute evaluations. For details, see the piece on “How to Remedy Advocacy Apathy,” in the GADFly stories to the left.
Also, please note that the GAD Reception is now on Thursday, May 12. I know there are a few of you who have your association reception, but I hope you'll be able to stop by.
Last, but not least...the GAD Institute registration opens in early May. The registration fee is $500 and will increase to $550 for a late registration. There will be three optional courses (space is limited) starting on Wednesday morning, preceding the opening session. These courses are free of charge, but will require your commitment through pre-registration.
If there are topics you would like to see addressed during the May meeting, please email me at jenny@carraranv.com.
Thanks! I look forward to seeing those of you who can make it to D.C. in May!
