nav_red_arrow.gif NAR Assistance on Ballot Initiative Campaigns
2016 is a big election year, and elections bring ballot initiatives.  Driven in part by national interest groups, public policy initiatives will appear on ballots throughout the country in 2016.   As of January 20, 49 state ballot measures have been certified for spots on the ballot in 20 states.  At the local level, California alone could see more than 500 local ballot measures.  Ballot initiatives often establish important precedents that ripple throughout the country.  The NAR Issues Mobilization Program can provide financial and technical support to assist state and local issue campaigns on ballot measures.  See the 2016 Meeting Schedule of the NAR Issues Mobilization Committee for monthly meeting dates and application deadlines.  For more information, please contact Julienne Uhlich at 202-383-1235 or Joe Maheady at 202-383-1006.

nav_red_arrow.gif How many REALTORS® are registered to vote?
Currently, 13 percent, or 144,200 members, are not registered to vote.  This is why one of the President’s Cup advocacy goals is for states to host a voter registration drive by election day (i.e. at a state convention, Broker Summit, or mail or email members, include in membership newsletter). View state REALTOR® voter registration numbers.  State and local associations may request member voter registration list from Mitchell Norton, NAR Campaign Services Representative.

nav_red_arrow.gif Meritorious Service Award (MSA) Process and Deadline
NAR is now accepting nominations for the 2015 Meritorious Service Award.  The deadline for submissions is February 22, 2016. Each year, NAR recognizes two outstanding Federal Political Coordinators (FPCs) for their exceptional service to the National Association of REALTORS® with this esteemed award. These recipients are the best of the best, those who truly believe in and advocate on behalf of the REALTOR® Party. Recipients meet rigorous criteria that set them apart from other FPCs.  The Meritorious Service Award nomination form is accessible online. For more information about the MSA Award and process, please contact Victoria Givens.

nav_red_arrow.gif State Action on the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice
Across the country legislation is being introduced at the state level that attempts to bypass the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). USPAP are the nationally accepted and recognized standards of appraisal practice. NAR believes that appraisal standards should be uniform across the United States and its territories, and does not support efforts to dilute USPAP or layer on additional sets of valuation standards. So far Montana, Texas, Florida, Tennessee, California and Indiana have faced changes to their state codes related to the use of USPAP. If you learn of USPAP-related legislation in your state or have any questions, please contact Sehar Siddiqi at 202-383-1176.

Jenny Reese
GAD Chair
Nevada Association of REALTORS®

It seems as if we started the new year running. As the economy and housing have recovered, the issues we face have started to change.  As many states head into a legislative session, many of us now have to deal with an anti-growth sentiment, the lack of affordable housing, signage issues and tax increases. These are all issues that were present prior to the downturn. I encourage you to use your colleagues as a resource, make sure to check out the GAD communications channels, and if you face challenges or successes in your state, share what you have done so we can all learn from it.

NAR just held another New GAD & AE REALTOR® Party Orientation. Unfortunately, weather prevented a number of people from making it to DC, but those that were in attendance were able to learn valuable information to help guide them in their new position. I encourage you to take advantage of the training provided for GADs throughout the year from NAR.

The GAD Advisory Committee is moving along with the planning of our conference in Nashville. If you have any suggestions on topics or keynote speakers, please reach out to me and I will bring it up during our next call. Until then, have a great February!
