nav_red_arrow.gif Issues Mobilization and Ballot Initiative Campaigns
As the November elections approach, please connect with NAR Campaign Services staff as soon as possible to begin the grant application process if you’re interested in campaign assistance from our Issues Mobilization Program.  For ballot initiative campaigns, a final grant application must be submitted no later than 90 days before the date that the first vote can be cast on the ballot initiative.  The Committee can waive this requirement based on the circumstances, and has done so on a number of occasions, but if you know or expect that a measure will be on the November ballot, please begin the application process now so that we can provide you with the best possible campaign assistance. Upcoming Issues Mobilization Committee meetings are:  July 7, July 21 (if necessary), August 4 and August 18 (if necessary).  For assistance, please contact Julienne Uhlich at 202-383-1235 or Joe Maheady at 202-383-1006.

nav_red_arrow.gif Independent Expenditure Campaigns
With primary season wrapping up in many areas, we wanted to remind everyone of the deadlines for independent expenditures activities. The following are the application deadlines for different expenditures still available through NAR this cycle:
Polling: Nine weeks prior to election date.
Mail: Five weeks prior to election date.
Phones and Online: Three weeks prior to election date.

For those planning for the November general election, this means September 5 for polling, October 3 for mail, and October 17 for phones and online. Please keep in mind that if you do not talk to us before September 1 about possible campaign activity with your allocated funds, your allocation will be reallocated to the general fund for all states to use (not applicable in MS, LA, VA, and NJ).  If you’re interested in running an independent expenditure campaign for a candidate in your area, please contact Mitchell Norton at 202-383-1091 to get the process started.

nav_red_arrow.gif Planning Your 2017 Budget?

nav_red_arrow.gif Hot Topic Alert: Backyard Farming
Why did the chicken cross the road? To get a bigger house with a better chicken coop. Backyard Farming is the thing to do these days. Not just in rural America but in cities of all sizes. What are some of the land use ordinances for those road crossing chickens?  For information on this Hot Topic Alert, please contact Adriann Murawski at 202-383-1068

nav_red_arrow.gif Department of Labor Updates Overtime Rules
On May 23, 2016, the Department of Labor (DoL) issued a final rule revising the Fair Labor Standards Act.  The final rule updates the standard salary level and total annual compensation requirements to distinguish between overtime-eligible white collar employees and those who may be exempt. The final rule raises the salary threshold to $47,476.  Unless specifically exempted, workers are guaranteed time-and-a-half pay if they work more than 40 hours in any given week if they make less than $47,476, including up to 10 percent of the standard salary requirement with nondiscretionary bonuses, incentive payments and commissions, provided these forms of compensation are paid at least quarterly. The rule will become effective on December 1, 2016.

nav_red_arrow.gif Walkable Communities
Walkable communities are becoming the latest trend in real estate and your association, and its members, need to be aware of how the demand for walkable communities impacts real estate. Listen to our webinar, download the Fact Sheet or read more on REALTOR® Action Center.   For more information on walkable communities, contact Holly Moskerintz.

nav_red_arrow.gif Phone-a-Friend for RPAC: The National Volunteer Phone Bank Initiative
Ensure that your hard work in performing a phone bank gets acknowledged. All phone banks must be setup in the PAC Management System so that they can be tracked and recognized.  Also, remember that in keeping with President Tom Salomone’s vision of reaching out to non-investors, the phone bank needs to target members who have not invested since 2014 or before, or have never given.  NAR can help every step of the way to make certain your phone bank is a huge success and raises needed money for your state RPAC. For more information on the phone bank program, contact Peter Kelly a2 202-383-7599.

On May 25, President’s Circle launched its fourth and final round of targets. There will be no additional targets in 2016. During this round, President’s Circle members may invest as little as $500 or up to the full $2,000 in any of the REALTOR® Champion targets. The full $2,000 investment is due by September 30, 2016, but it is important to collect funds as soon as possible so they may be of the most benefit to our candidates’ campaigns. Please encourage your members not to wait until Sept. 30 to complete their commitment.

Jenny Reese
GAD Chair
Nevada Association of REALTORS®

It was great to see everyone in D.C. for the REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo. There were so many new GADs that I was able to meet and I want to welcome you to the GAD Community.

I hope that you’re able to join us in Nashville for the 2016 GAD Institute. The GAD Institute brings so much beneficial information to you in a short period of time. The Institute will kick off with NAR providing an overview of the programs they make available to us as GADs to assist with campaigns, fundraising, grant programs and more. The Professional Development Day is aimed at giving us additional skill sets to help us succeed as government affairs professionals. Politics and Policy Day will give you the opportunity to hear the issues that you might be faced with in the near future like rental restrictions, for instance. On Saturday, the conference will conclude with Stuart Rothenburg as your keynote speaker. He is the founding editor and publisher of The Rothenburg and Gonzales Political Report, which is a nonpartisan political newsletter.

Remember to register as soon as possible as the registration fees will increase to $550 after June 10, and book your flights for later in the afternoon on Saturday so you’re able to hear Stuart Rothenburg speak. If you have any suggestions for the unconference breakouts at the GAD Institute, I encourage you to reach out to me at jenny@carraranv.com
