Mar. 3: MSA Award Nominations Due!
Meritorious Service Award nominations are due tomorrow, Friday, March 3, 2017. We have some incredibly deserving FPCs, so please nominate your pick for a chance at this prestigious award. Fill out the nomination form here.
As a reminder, each year, NAR recognizes two outstanding Federal Political Coordinators for their exceptional service. These recipients will be the best of the best of our FPCs, those who truly believe in and advocate on behalf of the REALTOR® Party. Recipients of the award meet a rigorous set of criteria that will set them apart from other FPCs. They demonstrate a strong relationship with their assigned Member of Congress, and a willingness to educate Capitol Hill on issues most pressing to the real estate industry.
The criteria are as follows:
- The candidate must have served as FPC for a minimum of four consecutive years or eight total years if not consecutively serving.
- The candidate must fulfill all job duties as listed on the pledge form.
- The candidate must establish effectiveness as the representative of the REALTOR® Party and real estate issues.
- The candidate must participate in various political events in the district on behalf of their Member of Congress (e.g., set up meeting for the Member at their local association, etc.).
- The candidate must show a history of volunteering for the Member of Congress’ campaign (e.g., host a fundraiser, canvass the neighborhood, make phone calls or donate their office as a phone bank, etc.).
- Bonus – RPAC investment history will be considered and is favored, but is not required to receive the award.

Is this the new form of housing protection? What does this mean for landlords? For more information, contact Adriann Murawski at 202-383-1068.

State Legislative Update
At least five states (Iowa, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey and Oregon) have introduced new legislation on First-Time Home Buyer Savings Accounts in 2017. Rent control or rent stabilization measures have been introduced in California, Hawaii, Illinois, New York and Washington. Hawaii lawmakers introduced an amendment that would prohibit housing discrimination based on source of income. New Hampshire introduced a bill that would prohibit housing discrimination based on gender identity. Wisconsin is considering a bill that would require a landlord to conduct a test for lead in the water supply for a new tenant. Hawaii and Virginia are also considering ways to regulate short-term rentals; while Indiana is considering legislation that would prevent local cities from banning short-term rentals. Plan to End Property Tax Deduction Detailed
House Ways & Means Committee Chair Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) explained his committee’s tax reform plan to REALTORS® in Washington earlier this month for a policy conference and FPC training. The plan would lower tax rates, reduce the number of brackets from seven to three, and almost double the standard deduction. It would also eliminate most itemized deductions, including for property taxes. The mortgage interest deduction would remain but few households would have an incentive to itemize. REALTORS® at the event expressed concerns. Details in the latest Voice for Real Estate news video from NAR. https://youtu.be/0u-j5RpHaas |

Message from the GAD Chair

Mark J. Quarry
GAD Chair
Cincinnati Area Board OF REALTORS®
|
Hello GAD Nation!
I hope you are all doing well and that March has started well for you. I love this time of year because we have both spring and summer ahead of us!
That, of course, means the 2017 REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo in Washington, DC are slightly more than two months away. As we mentioned last month, Congress has Tax Reform on its agenda, so therefore it will certainly be on our agenda for our Hill visits in May and all year long.
If you have not already, read NAR’s 2017 Legislative Priorities, particularly those on Tax Reform. Moreover, feel free to share these with your members.
The GAD Advisory Group continues work on professional development programming for GADs for the May Legislative Meetings in DC and the 2017 GAD Institute in West Palm Beach, FL. If you have any ideas or suggestions for these meetings, feel free to contact Cady Thomas, our Vice Chair, NAR Staff Executive Kyle Lambert London or me. In the meantime, if you would like to take advantage of a top-notch professional development course offered this April, please consider the Campaign Management Training 1.0 course in Austin, Texas. This is a highly rated course for GADs to get their feet wet in the campaign management process.
Have a great month!
Mark Quarry, Cincinnati Area Board of REALTORS®
GAD Chair
