THE GAD COMMUNITY LOSES A FRIEND, NATE JOHNSON
On March 28, the GAD community lost Nate Johnson. Nate, the GAD for the Coastal Carolina Association of REALTORS® (SC), was known among the GADs community as someone who could be counted on for advice and who would help out when needed. A Rochester, Minnesota native, Nate most recently served as the GAD for the Coastal Carolina’s Association of REALTORS®, and, prior to 2013, worked for the Southeast Minnesota Association of REALTORS® as their GAD.
“No words can adequately express our shock and sadness at Nate’s death or our gratitude for having the opportunity to know and work with Nate,” CCAR wrote on their Facebook page. Laura Crowther, chief executive officer for CCAR said, “We certainly loved Nate like he was our family. He was our family, you know.” Nate was involved in a multitude of initiatives and NAR grant programs that helped to make Myrtle Beach more accessible, walkable and a friendly environment for our members and their businesses. Expressing the impact Nate made on Myrtle Beach, Carol Coleman, the Planning Director for the city shared, “the light that he shined on this town will not go out if we have anything to say about it.”
Those GADs wishing to express their condolences, please visit Nate’s obituary. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Savannah’s Playground or the REALTORS® Assistance Trust Fund (RAFT). Nate is survived by his son and daughter, as well as his sister and brother, who live in Minnesota. He was 52 years old. |

State and Local Independent Expenditure and Issues Mobilization Program: April 2017 Corporate Ally Program Funds Available
The amount of funds available to each state as part of the State and Local Independent Expenditure (IE) and the Issues Mobilization (IM) Program as of April 1, 2017 is now available. The tables included here shows the 2017 state allocations for the IE program and the IM program from the REALTOR® Party Corporate Ally Program. This table will be updated every month based on any funds received via the REALTOR® Party Corporate Ally Program. As a reminder 4 states (VA, NJ, LA and KY) must use all of their IE funds by the end of 2017. The 46 other states have the ability to “carryover” IE funding until the 2018 elections. If you have any questions regarding the NAR State and Local IE Program please contact Mitchell Norton, at 202-383-1091. Corporate Ally Program Key Issue: Patent Reform
Have you read NAR General Counsel Katie Johnson’s recent article in The Hill on patent reform?
NAR is working in Congress and at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to both preserve reforms that help to combat abusive patent trolls and enact new litigation reforms in an effort to reduce the ability of patent trolls to extort dubious licensing fees from the real estate industry. What’s at stake? Rather than fighting individual court battles with patent trolls like Data Digital Technologies (DDT), reforms to patent regulations will offer broader protection to the real estate industry by making it harder for companies like DDT to make baseless demands for licensing fees. For more information on how your association can be a part of the Corporate Ally Program, please contact Paula Martino at 202-383-1156.

April & Spring Greetings GAD Nation:
Spring is here, Washington D.C.’s cherry blossoms are in full splendor and baseball season is underway. This time of year holds so much promise and fills our minds with hopeful and optimistic thoughts, but it can also remind us of the somber and stark realities of life.
Our hearts were broken when we learned that Nate Johnson, our dear friend and GAD colleague from the Coastal Carolinas Association of REALTORS® (CCARSC), died on March 28. Nate’s passing reminds us all that life is precious, and the time we all have here on earth is so brief. Click here to read an article by The Sun News / Myrtle Beach Online. Nate is survived by his two children. May God bless Nate’s entire family, his friends and his coworkers at the CCARSC. Nate, until we meet again, may you rest in peace dear brother.
Forty new REALTOR® Association staff members attended the REALTOR® Party New GAD & AE Orientation in Washington, D.C., March 30-31. Kyle Lambert-London delivered another well-organized and highly effective program. NAR Staff gave participants a solid overview of the REALTOR® Party and its many programs and resources available to all of us. Justin Allen and I participated again and provided another “seasoned” GAD perspective for the attendees.
Next month, we’ll gather in Washington, D.C., for the 2017 REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo. If you haven’t already, get those Hill Visits scheduled with your respective Members of Congress.
Finally, the GAD Advisory Group continues work on programming for the 2017 GAD Institute in West Palm Beach, FL (July 11-14, 2017). If you have ideas or suggestions about this year’s GAD Institute or anything else, please contact me, GAD Chair Mark Quarry, GAD Vice Chair Cady Thomas or Kyle Lambert London. Have a great April!
