The road to Fair Housing was not an easy one. From the passing of key legislation and constitutional amendments to establishing the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, we as a country and an organization have come a long way. Yet, we still see headlines and hear stories from our fellow REALTORS® that the challenge remains. |

The number of complaints alleging discrimination received annually by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) and its fair housing partner agencies. Even more disturbing is that one of the categories with the highest number of complaints involves discrimination against families with children, accounting for more than 1,000 each year. The number of state associations that have worked to pass First-Time Home Buyer Savings Accounts. Mississippi is the latest state to pass legislation, allowing Mississippians to create monetary savings accounts for down payments or other home purchase-related expenses. They join Montana, Virginia and Colorado. |

The number of local REALTOR® Associations that received the REALTOR® Party’s Community Outreach Award for 2015-16. These awards recognize associations that have worked within their communities to make them a better place to live and do business. Winners included the Cape Fear REALTORS® (NC), Greater Rochester Association of REALTORS® (NY), Austin Board of REALTORS® (TX), Richmond Association of REALTORS® (VA), Coastal Carolinas Association of REALTORS® (SC) and Bronx-Manhattan North Association of REALTORS®. |

Indianapolis REALTORS® Spearhead Expanded Public Transportation Funding |
With multiple Issues Mobilization Grants, the Mid-Indianapolis Board of REALTORS® led the charge to establish a fund to expand transit services in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Now that the effort has cleared the last of its legislative hurdles, a new income tax dedicated to building transport infrastructure will ensure greater economic prosperity for the region, and better quality of life for its residents. |

Federal Court Rules that Fair Housing Protects LGBT People
|
For the first time, a federal judge has ruled that provisions in the Fair Housing Act protect against LGBT discrimination. The law states that it is illegal to refuse to rent or sell property to anyone based on race, color, religion, sex, familial status, or national origin. But questions have been raised as to whether fair housing and other anti-discrimination laws also encompasses sexual orientation and gender identity when they are not explicitly named as protected classes. |
